Healthy organizations will spend time developing a core set of values that drive the way they work as an organization. It is important to have clarity on values because it provides an anchor for providing feedback when someone has fallen short of the agreed upon expectations.

But are work values something that individuals can develop as well? I say yes!

You might not think of them as something that you’d put pen to paper, design a poster, and post on the wall of every workspace like might happen in a company. (Of course, you could!) But you probably do have some underlying values that drive the way you approach work, that draw you to certain roles or certain organizations, or that simply define you as a human in a professional setting. It might actually be a good exercise to do in the job search process, or to see if your current role aligns with what you really care about.

Here’s what I mean by “values” in this context:

Organizational values are deeply ingrained behaviors core to the organization’s culture that guide all team interactions.

Values are not to be confused with Beliefs, Tenets, Mission, or Theory of Action – which are other critical aspects of an organizational or professional identity! (More on each of those in the near future…)

I recently developed a set of Values for Almavina Strategic Partners. (And let’s be honest, while my hope is for Almavina to grow in the coming years, it’s just me right now. So these double as my own professional values.)

Our/My Values:

What do you think? Do you get a sense of what it might be like to work with me when you read these? For those of you who have worked with me – does this ring true? Call me out if it doesn’t – see value #1: Humility!

What are YOUR values? Organizational or individual?
