One positive thing that has come through social media for me is a reminder of how good it feels to laugh. And not just in short bursts that come from reels or memes or whatnot, not just the chuckles from a RomCom or another funny movie, but real, from the belly, stand-up-comedy-induced laughter. Laughter really does have a way of filling your cup when it’s running low from work, stress, or just everyday life.

Short clips of stand-up comedian Gary Gulman started showing up on my Instagram feed in the fall. He has some great content about shopping at Trader Joe’s, which for anyone like me who is a TJ’s frequent shopper is hysterical and on-point. He also has this way of having to hold back his own laughter that I find makes the jokes even funnier. A few excerpts in, I was hooked.

Gary Gulman (or “Gar” to his friends – and if you need a friend, go to Trader Joe’s) published a memoir in 2023, Misfit: Growing up Awkward in the 80s. I immediately read it and watched his HBO special The Great Depresh. It turns out Gary Gulman is not just funny (and he is – incredibly funny), he is human, and he displays his humanity boldly and proudly. Gulman has suffered from severe anxiety and depression, and he speaks openly about it. The Great Depresh is a combination stand-up comedy show and a documentary about his battle with depression. It is simultaneously funny, heartbreaking, and inspiring. The memoir – as the title indicates – walks through his childhood from Kindergarten to 12th grade. If you, too, grew up in the 80s, you will love the nostalgia. From his description of the magic of learning to read (starring lovable furry old Grover, IFKYK) to the “hip” style choices to the older kid in the neighborhood who was the “responsible adult” after school, this narrative brings the 80s back to life.

I had the opportunity to see Gary Gulman perform live in February on his book tour. He was equal parts funny, endearing, and thought-provoking, as he took a strong stand for the things he believes in. (Again with the humanity, Gar?!) For  me, it was a rare night out with a dear friend and the evening filled my near-empty cup, as is the promise of a good laugh. He has had a new special out on HBO since December, and I have been saving it for when I desperately need a cup-filler!

Any other comedians I should check out? Please share in the comments. I’m going to stockpile them for later use – like over-the-counter antidepressants!
